Idols of the Heart

(by Elyse Fitzpatrick) Many people desire to live godly lives but feel trapped in habitual sins. They trip over the same bad habit, embarrassing weakness, or sinful slavery they wanted to be free of years ago. This book reveals that idolatry lies at the heart of every besetting sin. If you think of idols as stone statues in far-off lands, think again. Idols are the desires, longings, and expectations we worship instead of the true God. Fitzpatrick helps uncover hidden idols by moving us to ask:  What do I long for so much that my heart demands, Give me this, or else I'll die! What must I have for my life to be meaningful and happy? Do I love God whole-heartedly or are there other loves in my heart that clamor for my attention? Fitzpatrick shares the hope found in God's desire to have his children live free of idols, and his commitment to free them by his sanctifying power View pictures from the 2004 Christian Bookseller's Convention including Elyses's booksigning. The first and greatest commandment says that our relationship with God is a heart, soul, mind, and might's matter. God-substitutes, both tangible and figurative, are similarly matters of heart, soul, mind, and might. Such  false gods generate the garden-variety sins of irritability, self-pity, escapism, and anxiety, as well as the more extreme sins of anger, despair, addictions, and panic. David Powlison Elyse Fitzpatrick has a very high view of God and this book reflects that view. With great clarity and intriguing biblical illustrations, Elyse explains how the idols in our hearts compete with our affections for God. In a gentle way, she tells you how by God's grace to turn from your idols to a whole-hearted love for God. ”Martha Peace, Biblical counselor and author ELYSE FITZPATRICK counsels with the Institute for Biblical Counseling and Discipleship.
